MEDITERRANEAN COAST

El-Alamein (means: Two flags), Marsa Matruh

From Alexandria we drove to the west on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
Plenty of resort villages and towns makes it difficult to walk to the beautiful turquoise sea.
Our first stop was in El-Alamein to visit the Museum of World War II. 80.000 soldiers died
during the severe fights, when the German and Italian troops (led by the 'Desert Fox', Rommel)
were forced back towards Tunis by the Allies (led by Montgomery). The museum was shocking
experience. The Allies, the Germans and the Italians have separate war cemeteries few km far.
We spent two nights in Marsa Matruh, Hotel Negresco.

The Mediterranean Sea was splendidly turquoise.

Walking in the desert around Marsa Matruh is not advised, as there might be dangerous mines.

Marsa Matruh is a big resort, but in fact we were the only tourist in the town.

In the hotel room Mecca direction was marked on the wall, above the mirror. When Muslims pray, they kneel down facing towards Mecca.
The picture was taken from the terrace of our hotel room. The local tourist police kept non-stop guards at the hotel entrance, making sure that we have no problem.
